Why am I saying all this?

The Selfish Gene From time to time, as I add to this section, I ask myself why. Why do I think I have something to say about these things? Am I so arrogant that I think I have something to add to all the thinking that has gone into this over the centuries?

No. I don't have anything to add. None of this is new. It's just here because I spent page after page beating up on religion making it necessary to answer the question, "If not that, then what?"

Well, maybe I do think I have something to say, not something new, just something that needs to be said again and again. No, I haven't forgotten where we started: "There is no meaning."

If we look at how the universe works, how the rest of nature works, and how human society has always worked, we see no morality or ethics, just power - success of the more powerful over the less powerful. This is how it always was until something came along that could think. Here we are, able to think, and yet we came from and belong to the order of power. Are we stuck here or can we find another way?

For thousands of years people have tried to find an alternative to simply struggling for power. If we don't find and learn to live according to something else, our time as most successful species is near the end. We are about to consume the resources we need to survive. If we can find a way to change some very basic things about ourselves, we can have a world of peace and prosperity.
