A Dollar's Worth

old gas station I remember a phrase that has disappeared from the language. When I was young my father would pull into a gas station and say, "A dollar's worth."

Nobody says that anymore, first, because that isn't enough gas to get you very far, and second, because there is nobody to hear it if you do say it.

In fact there was a whole conversation I used to hear over and over. It went like this:

"Fill her up?"
"A dollar's worth."
"Check your oil?"
"No, it's okay."
