Fear of Commitment

Burger King bag One thing that amuses me is people avoiding commitment. One place I find it especially amusing is in statements made by organizations. Here's an example.

At the right is a piece of the bottom of a Burger King bag with a notice that says, "This Bag May Contain On Average 30% Post Consumer Materal."

I suppose that statement is meant to make us think that Burger King is doing something good for the environment - recycling material into their bags - but the statement really tells us very little about the bag. If you look carefully, you'll see that all it says is that they are unwilling to commit to whether or not the bag has any recycled material or how much or where. It may have some or it may not. If it does, the amount it has may be close to 30% or it may not. Furthermore, if there is any recycled material it may be distributed evenly throughout the bag (or among bags) or it may be concentrated more is some parts (or bags) than others.

What are they afraid of?
